My final Artefact is now underway and after extensive research and planning throughout the week, I have finally come up with a complete design for my artefact.
I have decided to produce an Advert for the brand; Lamborghini.

I decided to use a specific brand rather than a product as it would allow me more freedom to create the advert. I planned on creating a lengthened advert which would last no longer than 2 minutes.

The advert is being created as a promotional video that would be shortened after being shown on television several times.
I have put into practise all the techniques that my research project have taught me, and used aspects from my previous artefacts to create what I believe to be a successful advert.

Once the advert has been created, I will display it to a set audience and provide them with a questionaire that will display my knowledge and understanding of what makes a successful television commercial.

I began the planning of the advert by looking over the results from my previous artefacts and highlighting the the key aspects that my audience(s) identified as effective advertising techniques.

The criteria for the advert would be :
- A cutting style that would suit the brand/product
- An advert that would maintain the brands reputation
- The inclussion of a celebrity

As I have decided to produce an advert for Lamborghini, I feel it is important that create the advert using tecniques that I have found apparent with car adverts. However, I have taken into consideration that the majority of car adverts I have seen are for family cars and hatchbacks etc. and the Lamborghini brand is a world wide highly respected sports car brand, that are financialy out of reach to the majority of society.
I am ensuring that my advert will maintain this image that Lamborghini has, but also provide the audience with an entertaining advert.

I began by looking at adverts that Lamborghini have already created and found them all to be of a similar design. This design is obviously used to boost the attraction of the product, as it is advertised in a way which makes it seem more exclusive.

I wanted to carry on this design, but also wanted to "bring it down to earth" slightly and see if i could get a positive set of results from the audience.
Something I did notice from looking over the adverts was that I was unable to find any television adverts dating back to prior to the production of the Lamborghini Gallardo in early 2000's.

This is something I felt I could incorperate into my advert and reflect on the history of brand.
This then reminded me of an advert I had previously seen by Honda, called The Impossible Dream. Where it shows various methods of transport changing with the shot transitions.

This advert is the inspiration behind my design as I felt it would be effective to include videos of the development of Lamborghinis. I would do this by having shots of their most iconic cars which would change and become more recent as the shots change.

I also wanted to include celebrity figures into the advert, to carry on the exclusive image that the brand carrys.
I felt i could incorperate a celebrity into each scene by gathering videos of scenes from films in which a celebrity would be driving a car filmed around the same time of the production of the lamborghini that was featured in the shot.

After researching the history of the lamborghini, I began planning the layout for the video:

For my sixth Aretfact I am looking to produce an advert that contains all the effective aspects of tv advertising that I have learned throughout the duration of my client project.

Aspects I am looking to include in order to produce my own successful advert:

- Celebrity Figure
- Fitting Music
- Suitible product for style of advert
- Catch Line

I plan on producing this advert by collecting videos/adverts that have already been made for a product. I feel this will be easier if i create an advert for a brand, rather than a product.
Over the course of the next few days, I will draw up a story board and begin collecting the relavent videos that I will be able to use in my advert.

My initial idea for the advert is to use a car brand. As I believe this will allow me to create a fast paced exciting advert that will keep the audience drawn in. I am also aiming to include a celebrity, which I am aiming to use for comical value.
I will also use several slow cuts in order to display the Features and Benefits of the product.

After I have displayed the advert to the audience, I will issue each member with a questionaire which will indicate to me, how successful the advert was in terms of selling the product.

I've began planning out my penultimate Artefact. As i'm coming to the end of this project, I feel I need to begin looking into timing.

My previous Artefact gave me an insight into how products are advertised. By viewing television commercials over a 10 day period, I was able to see which techniques are used with what type of product/advert. I now have an understanding of how companies market their products, and what techniques are implemented with what product.

I've began thinking about what to do for my next Artefact. I feel I need to look into timing, to get an idea of how effective tv adverts actually are.

The idea I have for Artefact 5 is :

1.
Produce a list of adverts containing various cuts.
Sperate adverts into 5 groups, i.e. Matched Cuts, Slow Cuts, Quick Cuts etc.
gather an audience of 20 people (seperately).
Display Individually to each audience member and identify how long it takes for audience to identify product.

I believe by doing this it will further my understanding of the effectiveness of different types of cuts within television advertising as I will have produced a set of results that display how long a set audience take to identify a product in adverts edited using 5 different techniques.

I have recently come across a quote which has further supported my claims and artefacts that state that to create an effective advert, it needs to draw in the audience. Leo Burnett, creator of the "jolly green giant" campaign, and named by Times magazine as one of the most influential figures of the 20th century states:
"I am one who believes that one of the greatest dangers of advertising is not that of misleading people, but that of boring them to death."

After some panic, we have finally got it finished.
Due to me having Premier cs4, we couldnt export the file to an AVI file, due to some conflict with the old version of cs3 i had.

after researching online we finally managed to resolve the issue by deleating some hidden files from cs3.

then when we tried to burn the documentary using adobe encore, which had problems with the codex.

then eventually the day before the deadline we got it all finished off, aswell as printing off the dvd cover and case.

27th February - Final filming

Today we had our final filming date, and i rekon it actually went better than any of the others.
we got some great footage of the band recoding the album, as well as some really good "chit chat" with the band giving us some good stuff to work with, aspirations etc.

we also met the bands producer jez larder, who has actually worked with some really big artists. he also has some big aspirations for the bands.

one down side however was the constant humming outside from big extractor fans which we noticed when looking over the footage. its a shame because we didnt hear anything when we were filming.

13th Febuary - Filming at Recording Studio in Putney

Today we filmed in the Recording studio in Putney. It went well, although there were some problems inside the studio regarding lighting.
As to be expected, the studio was very dim but we made best of what we had and managed to fill the room with sufficient lighting.

We also went for a walk with the band around Putney, (their local area) and got some great footage and answers with the band. luckily enough the sun was out which helped with the outcome.

it did however come at a cost, and due to us having two sets of cameras, stands etc. we had to rent out a car, at a cost of 200 pounds between us including petrol.
lets hope it will all be worth it!

January 16th - Filming @ The Half Moon, Putney

Today we had our first filming date with The Morning Side. They were playing a gig at their local venue, the famous Half Moon Pub in Putney, which has seen many famous acts over the years and recently came close to closure.

We collected some good footage from the night, including back stage footage which will prove to be very useful for the final product.

ON the 21st November, myself and Rosie met up with the lead singer Daryl Van Horn who was speaking on behalf of the band and giving us his input into how he would like the final product to be.
He outlined the criteria of what the band wanted from the project:

· A documentary covering a brief history of the band, where we at now, charting the album recording process and thereafter. Including live footage, studio diary footage, interviews, stills and music, accompanied by a music video.

· Opening scenes: live footage/stills montage accompanied by our music and narrative explaining a brief history of the band, with interviews interspersed.

Eg: “The Morning Side were formed in 2007, in a rehearsal space under the arches of a south London Tube station”. (location shot of Putney Bridge station and our rehearsal space)

“Founder member and lead vocalist, Daryl van Horn had overseen numerous line-up changes over the space of two years, but finally got lucky when he placed an ad on an classifieds website for musicians”

(quick interview footage of me explaining how hard it is to find kindred spirits – blah, blah. Followed by interview footage of each member explaining how they saw the ad, what appealed etc.)

“Inspired by an eclectic mix of British and American Indie bands, 80’s electro-pop-rock and Dance music, The Morning Side took several months to perfect their sound. In a market that is fierce, due to the influence of the internet and the recent boom of DIY music culture, their synth-heavy commercial-rock seemed to strike a chord with live audiences, who enjoy big sounds and catchy choruses.” (stills/clips etc. Followed by more interview footage of band members discussing influences – how the sound came together)

The Morning Side

For our client project, me and Rosie have chosen to produce a piece of work for a band called The Morning Side, based in Putney, South West London.
The band have recently been signed to their first record label and wanted to use the video as a promotional piece for their debut album.
An agreed 8 - 10 minute video is to be produced from the begining of october until the end of march.

"The Morning Side were formed under the arches of a South London Underground station in 2007. Sharing a love of guitar pop and electronic music, the band quickly developed their own sound. NME calls it "Slick synth-rock" with comparisons regularly made to The Killers, MGMT and Friendly Fires. A cocktail of huge choruses, floor-filling rhythms and stadium-sized synths are testament to that.

It took less than a year for The Morning Side to gain Industry recognition, by performing to a growing following at esteemed venues such as 93 Feet East, Islington Bar Academy, The Clapham Grand, The 100 Club and The Metro Club.

After the band were nominated for a 2008 Indy Music Award, interest from Industry players was forthcoming. Having been courted by several indie labels, The Morning Side recently agreed a deal with the Shameless Music Group.

here is the edited version of first artefact. It is an advert for nissan. I have re-edited the advert using quick cuts and taking out large sections of the story line. I have done this to test the effectiveness of quick cuts in an edit. I will play both the original and my edit to a selected audience which will vary in age, gender and race. I will take questionaire results from each member of the audience and then use graph charts in order to display my results. This will give me an indication into which style of cuts make more effective television advertising.

We went to begin filming for our client project on saturday night. The morning side had a concert at a venue called the half moon in putney. Jump Cut - A cut in which an abrubt jump from scene to scene occurs.

Matched Cut - A cut used to make the transition between shots seem smooth. I.e Continuity of direction.

Motivated Cut - A cut which is used to make the viewer see something that is not currently visable.

Quick Cutting Rate - Quick Cuts ensure short shots which will keep the viewer drawn into the imagery

Slow cuts - slow cutting rate allowing longer viewing time and often feature transitions

P2P File Sharing Proposal

After researching the history of file sharing and different advertising campaigns, I feel the ISP’ (Internet Service Providers), and the BPI ( British Phonographic Industry) who are working together to crack down on illegal file sharing have not yet made it clear to the public how they are going to track down people who illegaly share files.
I believe this is something they should look to address, as the current adverts are not doing enough to raise awareness of the damage it is currently doing to both the music industry and the film industry. A campaign in which both the ISP’s and the BPI’s are working together to introduce a new “three strikes” law, which has recently been introduced in France.

My proposal is to inform the public of how ISP’s are able to identify people who are file trafficing. I plan on informing the public that their IP address is what ties them to their computer. It is through the IP address that also allows the ISPs to see how many bytes any computer has been downloading. An average computer on the internet downloads around 25000 bytes, a computer on the internet downloading will consequently download alot more bytes, and this is how the ISP’s are able to see who has been downloading.
I want my advert to begin with quick shots of a man walking down a road carrying files with the names of bands, films and computer programmes on. It will be a series of shots of close ups of the files with the man carrying them appearing to be in a rush and distressed, which you will be able to tell from the heavy breathing.
As he continues home the camera will show him handing and collecting files from people standing by the entrance to their property. The actors will appear nervous and give the impression of drug dealing, I would like to do this so that the viewer will associate whats going on in the advert with an illegal activity.
The sound in the advert will still be atmospheric, with the mans footsteps and heavy breathing the only two sounds I will look to create and enhance in this part of the advert. This is to make the advert seem more dramatic.
The man will finally reach the entrance to his terraced house, carrying different files to the ones he had at the begining of the advert. This will be shown by having different coloured files, and different film and musician names written across the files.
As the man reaches his house the camera will follow him through the gate and up the steps, as the door slams shut the camera will stop looking at the closed door. In place of the number on the door, I will edit in an IP address. Within 2-3 seconds of the door closing, two silhouettes will move up to the door followed by three loud knocking sounds. In the background with every knock, I plan to have the sound of a judges hammer, to give the audience an impression of the law. I will then close the scene and fade to black with white text informing the viewer about ISP’s being able to identify people downloading by their IP address.

Joolz Tutorial - Developing my Ideas...

During our tutorial yesterday we talked over our ideas and gave each other feedback. One piece of feedback i recieved which I had already considered was Budget. And how I would have zombies/dinosaurs/bands walking towards the house that was file sharing.
After taking this into consideration, I feel as though I have found a solution to the small budget I have available.

- Rather than having Band members/zombies/people representing musicians/actors, I will have a line of people (or just the house owner?) carrying folders/files to the house, the camera will show a close up of the folders, which will have names of films/computer programmes/musicians/games written accross the front of them. The people will all be walking towards the house, which is identified by the IP address. This is to represent file sharring.

- Once the camera has revealed what is happening, ( by showing the people/person physiclly carrying the files/folders ) to and from his house,(with several people constantly coming and collecting files and folder from his living room around his computer) a neighbour will walk out infront of the struggling person/people with some CD's and quote "it's a lot safer buying these".

I have based this idea around the damage that can be done to your computer from p2p file sharring, aswell as the damage it does to the industry.
This is a different approach to my other idea, which was using scare tactics. This is more of an informative advert, that will inform people that downloading can harm their computer, (spyware)
I feel this could be an effective way to grab the attention of the audience. more coming soon.......

Joolz' tutorial

After having joolz's tutorial last week, I have began to get an idea of how my commercial will look. I feel this project ties in nicely with my research project, which is also advertising related.
Through research this week, I plan to explore how much advert will be visually interesting, and how to draw the audience in.

Here is one commercial I found that was regularly shown on british television and film for a good part of a year.
One thing all these commercials have in common is scare tactics, and it compares people downloading music to people who steal cars/handbags etc. This is obviously the best way to address the issue, because it will make people aware that it is a crime and being caught will land you a court appearence/fines and possible internet disconnection.

This is a similar route that I would like to go down. My initial idea is to have the camera from inside a car driving down the street looking at houses, it will be night time and the street will appear dark.

I intend to have IP address' on several of the houses down the street in white, and as the car goes down the road one of the IP address' will appear red, indicating that they have been illegally downloading. The camera will then go up to the front door, burst through the door and zoom into the room where the computer is. The camera will then zoom into the computer screen and a loud jail door slamming shut. A narrator will then explain how an IP address ties to you to your computer and thats how ISPs will be able to locate people illegally downloading.

Due to the increase in downloading, ISP's (Internet Service Providers) has been working with BPI's ( British Phonographic Industry ) to combat illegal file sharing. It is now possible for the BPI to obtain any Internet users IP Address, and identify users who download illegally due to the ammount of bytes that has been downloaded onto the computer. An IP address is an identification tool, and enables ISP's to locate any internet user at any time. Obviously due to the ammount of internet users, it is very difficult to pin point those who download illegaly. Although in recent times, an increasing number of illegal downloaders have been hit with fines for their participation in this illegal activity.

This is what I am going to base my advert around, I want to identify to the public that they can be caught downloading by their IP address. On the adverts that I have seen regarding downloading, none of them have informed the public that their IP address allows ISP's and BPI's to identify them as illegal downloaders, and if caught will face prosecution which will lead to a fine, banned from downloading and a possible jail sentence.

The worst cases may be sent to the Crown Court, which has the power to impose an unlimited fine and up to 10 years' imprisonment.

Those downloaders who can show that all their music and films copied from the internet are only for personal use will escape the full weight of the criminal law. But that does not mean personal use downloading is legal. Taking a song or film without paying for it is a breach of copyright. The real issue here is detection and the steps the industries are taking to enforce their members' rights. In a recent development, the British Phonographic Industry has started working with big internet service providers such as Virgin. Thanks to the ISPs' access to IP addresses, the BPI and the ISPs can contact individuals suspected of illegal downloading. Stern letters have been sent which issue threats of disconnection if the file sharing is not discontinued. The BPI has even threatened file-sharers with a court appearance.

New UK Downloading Law Proposal

A “draft consultation Green Paper” to be released by the UK Government proposes a three strikes and you’re out law to combat illegal downloads.

Under the proposal, UK internet users will be monitored by their ISP’s for illegal downloads, and those caught will receive an e-mail warning in the first instance, internet suspension the second time, and then termination of their contract on the third strike. A similar law was proposed in France back in November 2007.

According to the BBC quoting The Times, broadband firms which failed to enforce the rules could be prosecuted, and the details of customers suspected of making illegal downloads would be made available to the courts.

The proposal faces several serious hurdles, such as attributing blame where internet access is shared, and then determining what is illegal content. Although BitTorrent traffic is primarily pirated material, there is also increasing amounts of legal material as well. Even this week a German record company offered its entire music catalog via Pirate Bay, so even using and accessing material from the most famed pirate site of them all may not actually constitute downloading illegal material.

The proposal unsurprisingly comes from the Music and Record industry, and although not yet law is being promoted by the UK Government as part of a “comprehensive plan to bolster the UK’s creative industries,” so looks like it will be implemented at some time in the future

File Sharing - An Insight

Types of file sharing - There are many different ways to file share, different sites have come and go over the past ten years which have enabled the public to exchange files between themselves either using a programme to upload music too, or using a peer to peer network. The first I remember was Napster, which was set up by Shawn Fanning in 1999, and stayed active online untill 2001. Napster was the first real mainstream File Sharing site and despite it being short lived, it paved the way for other file sharing programmes, such as Kazaa, Morpheus, Limewire & Bearshare.
Along with Mp3 files, it soon became increasingly simple for users to share bigger files such as Computer programmes and Video Games. Torrent sites such as BitTorrent, Torrent spy and The pirate bay began appearing between 2002 and 2003 making it even easier for users to illegaly share files.
Despite record companies and musicians filing law suits against the owners of napster,kazzaa etc. The first real clamp down and jail sentenced issued was to the four men who were responsible for the administration and hosting of the well known file sharing site The Pirate Bay. The four men were found guilty of breach of copy right law, and were found guilty of 34 cases of copyright infringements. (21 were related to music files, 9 to movies and 4 to games), and claims against them for damages in excess of $13 million us dollars were filed. All four men were sentenced to serve one year in prison and have been ordered to pay the sum of $3.5 million dollars in damages. This is by far the harshest sentence anyone has recieved regarding illegal file sharing

Simulated Client Project

We have been assigned the task of a simulated client project in order to prepare us for our real client project which begins in december. For this we have to produce a 20 second television advert that addresses the issue of illegal filesharing. I.e Piratebay. There have been several adverts on television over the past year which immediately spring to mind, unfortunatly i cannot post the videos on here because I still don't have the internet at my house and am still forced to use restricted internet at work.

When I began planning for this piece of work, I immediately thought of previous adverts that had been made regarding illegal file sharing, and how I reacted when I saw them, which was pretty uninterested. Rather than addressing the issue as a whole, I.e. producing a short 20 second film which basiclly "Downloading is a crime", i feel it would be more beneficial to address the issue in a different way, by informing the viewer whats illegal about it, or bringing something new to light that the public might not be aware of.

Power of Suggestion
To understand the Power of Suggestion, you need to appreciate the nature of suggestion and how it works. For example, they should always be in the positive. If you read ‘don’t think of a black cat’, what do you think of? If only at a subconscious level, you probably thought of a black cat. That is because you have to think about each word before understanding the grammar. The unconscious works in the same way. So if you think to yourself ‘don’t worry, don’t worry‘ you are actually programming yourself to worry, because ‘worry’ is being repeated to your subconscious. Do you see how this works? This is a useful tip for everyday life. For example it is more influential to say ‘please be on time‘ rather than ‘please don’t be late‘. When someone asks you how you are, answering ‘not bad‘ will leave the word ‘bad’ lingering in their subconscious, which they may then associate with you. So first tip for the power of suggestion: the subconscious takes things literally, one word at a time, and processes all the associations for those words.

Here is a very rough example of how I intend this to work. Imagine this image was a television advert, as you focus on the dot in the middle, all of the other colours around it seem to disapear as you focus solely on the information in the middle of the page/screen. This is a basis for my edited films/reports, as I would like to create a similar effect through editing.

While I have the ideas fresh in my head, I thought I should jot them down on here so I can develop them further as I go on, and have something to work with-

- On my return to the UK, to start Uni I noticed all the goings on about a new Identity Card that all UK Citizens should purchase, which included a chip and all general information, Birthday/Address? and whatever other information you should ever need to provide when questioned.

- From speaking with people about this, I understand that the general opinion of these ID cards wasn't a particularly high one, as 1; people felt paying £30 was un-neccasery, and 2;(more importantly for my project) an ivasion of privacy.

What I felt was a good idea was to find a news report on this story and edit it in a way that gives the audience a different perspective on this, by using the power of suggestion and subliminal messages. I would show the original video, to an audience and record their reactions and thoughts about the ID card. then to a seperate group of similar age and personality, I will show an edited version in which I will include subtle messages that will make the audience have a completely different perspective on the ID cards.

Derren Brown

Recently, Derren Brown did an experiment over live television which was aimed to make anyone who watched it sit down and be unable to get up untill he did whatever he does to allow you to stand up again. Neither I, or anyone else I know who watched it were stuck to their seat. The reason I have mentioned this, is because I feel it ties in with my research project. Before Derren Brown played the clip, he was talking the viewer through the process and what to do. while he was doing this, a split second illustration of someone sat in the correct position flashed up on the screen. This has led me to believe that, the only reason people were stuck to their seat was because they allowed them selves to be, through the power of suggestion. I feel the trick didn't work on me, because despite being open to the idea of suggestion, I was always in denial about his ability to "glue me to my seat". For my research project, I would like to show how films/documentaries/adverts can influence different people through subliminal messages and the power of suggestion through editing.
I would love to be able to add some video clips to back me up in this post, but unfortunatly I can't access youtube or any video sites from this computer, so you'll have to just imagine for the moment.....

Unfortunatly, I am back to no Internet at my house as Sky seem to be unable to help with pretty much anything. So I am having to use to Internet at work again, obviously for stricly work use only. kind of.
I have been looking around on the internet to give my research project a kick start, and just give me some more inspiration so that I can develop my idea further. In doing this I found an interesting website, which has details on subliminal messages in films & adverts. I found this quite interesting and feel it can tie in with the idea I already have, which was to initially give evidence as to how much power is within television and film and how it can be used to control an audience. I was initialy going to do this, through re-editing news reports and changing the story. I feel by using the subconscious mind both through Subliminal messages, and the power of suggestion, I can produce a more interesting and accurate project.

Over the easter break I was considering exactly what field of work i was looking to enter within the adui visual industry. Last term i wrote an essay stating my desired position, which was a director. Shortly after writting this essay i installed adobe premier on my computer and began editing. After researching into directing, i began to feel unsure whether this was something i wanted to persue. After i have begun editing i now feel as though this is an area of the industry i am more suited to as i am able to use my creative side. After researching into this, I have become increasingly interested in documentary editing, and mentioned this to Simon in my review last week. Since this meeting i have began developing my idea for my research project.
I want to look into truth and how it is used to send of different messages in documentaries, and how it can be bent to tell a completely different story. We looked over a film made by Leni Riefenstahl called triumph of the will. Which is a propaganda tape made for adolf hitler.
One idea i have is to gather new footage from September the 11th, and edit it so i can tell the story as I belive it to be.
I have strong beliefs that the American Government were partly behind the attacks and responsible for the deaths of thousands of people.

several documentaries have been made giving "proof" that the American government were behind the attacks. Such as loose change 1st and 2nd edition, which has been constantly amended due to new information that points the finger at the american government.
What i want to do, is to gather enough footage from news reports from september the 11th and days after, and compile a documentary that tells the story as how i percieve it to of happend. I want to do this to highlight how the media can tell a completely different story to what has happend, not just by not lying. but just simply by editing.

Research Project

For my research project, I want to explore the use of music and sound in a project and how it affects the audience’s perception of the film/documentary.
I would like to experiment the different types of sounds used in different films. For example if I were to create a horror film, I would over exaggerate the sounds used to scare the audience. Due to me having a low budget, I would not be able to create the graphic images used in modern day horror films which scare and make viewers feel nauseous. I would like to try and give viewers this feeling through the use of sound. By creating and editing noises I feel as though I would be able to do this.
An idea I have come up with is to create a horror film, which does not show any graphic scenes and allows the audience to draw up the graphic images in their head.
For example, a man will be stood in an abandoned room and as he is about to be killed, the screen will go blank and I will try and create sounds which represent this. By using synthetic sounds, I would like to trick the audience into assuming the worst has happened. Then reveal what has really happened at the end of the film.
I am currently experimenting this in my second year project, as the events in my film are based around a piece of music being created for my production. I want the music and sound to take the audience on an audio visual roller coaster which is led through the use of sound.
The use of sound in films such as “Gangster Number 1” in the torture scene, which is one of the most brutal scenes I personally have seen. However, due to the light music used it comes across as quite easy to watch.
Another scene in which this occurs, is “Saving Private Ryan”, when Tom Hanks steps off the landing craft onto the beach of Omaha. As he looks on in shock and amazement, the sound is completely cut off, except for a high pitch sound, which indicates he has been deafened. This almost calms the scene down, and allows the audience to concentrate on the visual aspects of the shots.
What i'd like to do, is to shoot the scene of a film and re-edit it with different sounds and audio effects and see what different effects it has on the audience

Todays Seminar

In todays seminar with Debs, the focus was on the title scene. which in all fairness, i hadn't given much thought too prior to the seminar. good job i attended.
By studying the title scene to the film "23" and annalyzing everything they've done for it, it has opened new ideas to my film and how i can use to the introduction to give the viewer more of an insight into the meaning of my film.
I am going to use stop frame of white powder on a background, moving as if it was a heartbeat on a life support machine. It will do this in time with the intro music, which at this stage will be just a heart beat. The heart beat will the progress constantly throughout the film untill the end, when it will start as it begun.
As it moves with the heart beat, it will gradually form the title of my film. triptease.

Best Movie Scene

This scene from Gangster number 1 is one of my favourite scenes ever. The naration really tells the story of the main character and the scene. It almost allows the viewer to feel and visualise what is going on inside his head as he makes his way to murder lenny. The use of music over the sound of Lenny Screaming gives the viewer a sense of psychoacoustics.

Scene 1

The two boys are in the living room of their house. Both boys are sat on opposite sofas. The camera switches between the two as they converse. Tom is on the sofa against the wall, while Simon is on the sofa closer to the door.

Simon - How are you feeling?

Tom - Yea alright, feeling a bit weird and I’ve got a horrible taste in the back of my throat.

Simon - Tell me about it, you might have to go get us both a drink soon.

Tom - I will do, it’s pretty quiet in here mate, you should stick some music on or something.

Tom pauses

Tom - Probably for the best Will didn’t come out ay?

Simon - Mmm, probably.....

Simon thinks for a moment

Simon - anyway I’ll put some music on, it is pretty quiet. I beg you go and get that drink though

Tom - Yea sort that out, I just wanna skin up first.

Scene 2

Simon is now knelt on the floor picking music from his ipod, Tom is on the sofa trying to look for the necessary items to roll a joint with. He is clearly finding this more and more difficult, as he is struggling to remember where he has put the objects.

Tom - Where are the skins mate?

Simon - Didn’t you already have them? look in my coat pocket next to you, I think I have some in there.

As Tom looks up towards Simons jacket, his eyes go up the wall toward the corner of the ceiling. And stares for a while with his mouth open.

Tom - What’s up with your walls, I swear they’re not completely straight.....what are you doing with that music anyway, I thought you were going to put something on?

Simon - Yea Yea just setting up a play list.

Simon gets up, with a slight stumble back
Simon - Woah, what the hells going on?

Simon puts his hand to his head, and looks at Tom as if he were looking straight through him.

Tom pauses what he’s doing, but continues to look at it for a few seconds. He then looks up at Simon who is still aimlessly staring at him and with a small smile on his face says,

Tom - “Wait, what are you on about?”

Simon - “Nah nothing, what was I doing again?”

Tom - “I have no idea what your going on about”

Tom picks up his tobacco pouch to continue what he was doing, then stops mid way and says:

Tom - Oh yeah a drink

Simon begins having a look around and the sofa catches his eye

Simon - Yeah about time you sorted that out, the taste of this stuff has nearly made me throw up in the back of my throat several times.

Tom, who is struggling to comprehend anything looks up toward the door in confussion.

Tom - Yeh I suppose I should get on that.

Both boys look at each other in a paused state, before Tom begins to get up and heads toward the door.

Scene 3.

Simon is sat on the sofa with his head resting on his hands, slightly swaying. As Tom is about leave the room.....

Simon - “I don’t really know what to do with myself”

Tom begins to aimlessly look around the room, and with a puzzled look on his face says

Tom - Yeah I’ve completely forgotten what I was going to do, what was I doing again?

Tom looks at the wall in the confusion for 3-4 seconds. The audience can almost see the cogs turning inside Toms head.

Tom - Oh yeah, I was going to get a drink

Tom walks toward the door, and as he leaves the room he stops and turns to face Simon with a confused face. Simon notices Tom has stopped by the door and looks up at him in just as much confusion. Tom begins to shake his head in disbelief at this state. He then leaves the room.

Scene 4.

The mood of the movie has now changed. As the camera follows Tom out of the room, the lighting is now not so bright, and the camera is slightly lower down to give the viewer the impression of how Toms feeling.

Tom enters the hall way and begins to look around the room. At some points he will half smile, others almost look afraid. As he begins walking slowly toward the unlit kitchen a shadow moves behind it, but he doesn’t notice. He continues into the kitchen and without entering the room puts his arm round the wall attempting to find the light switch. After grasping the wall for several seconds he finally finds the switch, and turns the light on.

As the light comes on, Tom half takes a step back from the sharpness of the light. He walks over to the kitchen sink as he looks around for a glass, he looks out of the window in front of the sink.
While squinting he says:

Tom - “What the fuck?”

A silhouette of a person flashes past the window, tom jumps back in shock. A shadow moves behind tom along the wall, this time Tom notices it and turns around in panic. The shots of tom will all be from afar to emphasize how distant from reality he is and how distant he feels from all the objects in the room, i.e doors and chairs.

As tom struggles to walk properly into the living room, he is swaying from side to side and has no sense of balance.

Scene 5
The camera is back in the living room with Simon sitting on the sofa. He is nervously looking around the room, showing obvious signs of discomfort. As he frantically looks around the room, he attempts to look for his phone, there is a loud bang against the window. Simon immediately stands up, and half falls back on the sofa. As he gets up, the camera will pan across Simons face as he turns his head.
As he stumbles up to the window and slides across the curtain, I will show a shot at the window from the outside, where another silhouette will flash by the camera. As Simon steps back in shock, the door of the room will slam shut, followed by running footsteps,
Simon looks both confused and scared, and shouts

Simon - “Tom?”

The camera shows Tom between the kitchen and the living room spinning round in circles on the spot. The camera is down by his feet spinning round with him, looking up at his face, this is to try and let the audience share the characters experience.

Scene 6

The camera switches back to Simon in the living room. He is stood close to the window, the lighting in the room has been lifted and the mood of the film has lightened. Still with a confused look on his face he stands for a moment with an obvious question on his mind. Both boys look at each other for a moment, when Tom breaks the silence,

Tom - “wwwhat the hell was that all about? That was rediculous?”

Simon - “I was in here on my own the whole time, I didn’t know what to do with myself”

Tom “mate, we were both by ourselves”

Simon - “yeh maybe next time we should all try and stay together ”

Tom pauses for a moment

Tom - “yeh definatly”

Camera switches to Simon, as a questioning look grows on his face

Simon - What are you doing?

Camera switches back to Tom who is grabbing a cd case. Long shot

And then from far out will zoom into tom who has just done another line of ketamine and goes into the back of his chair. The camera will zoom right up close to Tom’s eye for the final shot. This shot will be sped up to display the drugs entering Tom’s body.

The camera will then switch outside and reveal Wills face laughing in a bush.

Belly Opening scene

when we were giving the task to identify a scene from a film where we feel the music plays an important role. I immediatly thought of this scene from the film "Belly". I like the way they have used an acapella, and dubbed out the other sounds from an obviously loud environment. I feel this is a really good effect and adds makes what would usually be quite an intense opening scene into something quite opposite. The use of sound like this makes the viewer wonder what the characters are doing in the scene, up untill the first gun shot is fired, which is when other sounds start being brought in. Once the acapella has finished at the beat comes in, is when the narative begins, and the story starts to unfold. This is once of my most memorable scenes from all films, and i definatly feel the use of sound and music is the reason why.

This is the Mayan Temple is Guatamala, i liked the location of this temple as it is in the middle of the rain forest. The temple also has relevance to the nostradamus prophecies.

This is the biggest Cathedral in the world and is based in Sevilla

This is the Roman Catholic Cathedral In liverpool. I chose this because it is the most modern church in the UK, which would represent the futuristic idea of our film.

This is the Saint Remt de provence in france, i chose this location because this is where Nostradamus was born and it relates to the iodea of our story.

This is St.John Latral church in Rome. This is the worlds oldest Cathedral, and where the pope lives. Which is why i chose this location.

This is the Sagrada Familia Cathedral in barcelona. i chose this because it is the first religious spot that came to my mind. It is a very gothic church, and very charasmatic and I feel this would be a good location for our film we were discussing in our seminar.

At this point I will try and re-create the effects in Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, when Tommy has just lost a game of poker and is walking away from the building. This will hopefully give the audience an effect of nausea, and so they can almost share Toms experience.

The camera only has Simon and Tom in the picture, and the camera will switch between Tom and Simon during their conversation. The camera will also zoom in on Will when he says his line in the opening scene.

The camera will then focus on Tom as he begins to roll a joint and get all of the necessary items together. The camera will then show Simon as he moves to the floor to put some music on through the stereo. The camera will switch between the two during the conversation and I will use an over the shoulder shot of Simon while he is on the floor changing tracks on his ipod..

The camera stays on Tom while he begins to roll a joint, Simon is still on the floor, flicking through music. He then looks to his side and pans up the wall toward the ceiling.

This is when the lights will dim in the room, and I will show a close up of Toms face as he scans across the room, so the user can get an idea of how Tom is feeling. I will also use visual effects to give the user a haunting feeling.

The camera will show Simon as he puts his hand to his head, and looks at Tom as if he were looking straight through him. I will show this shot from behind Tom, so that you can see Tom pause while he rolls the joint then looks up at Simon.

The camera will switch between the two during the conversation to show their facial expressions.

The camera will then focus on Tom as he searches for his tobacco to continue what he was doing.

As he does this, the camera pans out and shows that Will is no longer in the room.

Simon then asks Tom where Wills gone and the camera shows tom look up from what he is doing, and show the suprise on his face when he notices Will is no longer in the room.

Both boys look at each other in a paused state. Silently questioning who was going to see if he was alright.
The camera will switch between the two while they discuss how they are feeling, this will include a shot of the two talking through the window to give the user an indication of someone watching them

Simon - How are you feeling?

Tom - Yea alright, feeling a bit weird and I’ve got a horrible taste in the back of my throat.

Both boys without looking behind them at the door ask Will,

Tom - How about you Will? What you sayin’?

Will - Yea just a bit clouded

Simon - Yea should probably put some music on, it’s a bit quiet in here

Tom - Yea sort that out, do either of you have any king skins, I’ll skin up.

Simon is now knelt on the floor picking music from his ipod.

Simon - Yea man, look in my coat pocket next to you, they’re in there.

Tom - Nice one.

The camera stays on Tom while he begins to roll a joint, Simon is still on the floor, flicking through music. He then looks to his side and pans up the wall toward the ceiling.

Tom - What’s up with your walls, I swear they’re not completely straight.....what are you doing with that music anyway, leave it alone

Simon - Yea Yea just setting up a play list.

Simon gets up, with a slight stumble back

Simon - “Woah, what the hells going on?”

Simon puts his hand to his head, and looks at Tom as if he were looking straight through him.

Tom pauses what he’s doing, but continues to look at it for a few seconds. He then looks up at Simon who is still aimlessly staring at him and with a small smile on his face says,

Tom - “Wait, what are you on about?”

Simon - “Nah nothing, what was I doing again?”

Tom - “I have no idea what your going on about”

Tom picks up his tobacco pouch to continue what he was doing.

Simon begins having a look around and the sofa catches his eye, as he goes to sit down he notices Will has left the room.

Simon - “Where the hells will gone?”

Tom, who is struggling with even beginning to roll a joint looks up toward the door in confussion.

Tom - “I have no idea, I didn’t even notice him leave the room. He’s probably pranging out in the kitchen”

Both boys look at each other in a paused state. Silently questioning who was going to see if he was alright.

Tom - “I’ll go and look for him in a sec, I need to get some more filter material anyway, I’m having a bit of a nightmare over here with my head in this state”

Simon is sat on the sofa with his head resting on his hands, slightly swaying.

Simon - “Yea tell me about it, I don’t really know what to do with myself”

Tom begins to aimlessly look around the room, and with a puzzled look on his face says

Tom - “Jesus, where the hell is that kid? I’m going to go have a look for him”

Tom stands up and also slightly stumbles, then looks at Simon in confussion and says

Tom - “Well this is going to be an interesting walk, I’m going to go and see what Wills playing at”

Simon - “Yea, bring me in a drink as well. I need to get rid of this taste”

Tom - “Yea I’ll try and remember, I’ve already forgotten what I was going in there for.........

Tom looks at the wall in the confussion for 3-4 seconds. The audience can almost see the cogs turning inside Toms head.

Tom - “Oh yeah, I was going to see where Will was”

Tom walks toward the door, and as he leaves the room he stops and turns to face Simon with a confused face. Simon notices Tom has stopped by the door and looks up at him in just as much confusion. Tom begins to shake his head in disbelief at this state. He then leaves the room.

Scene 2.

The mood of the movie has now changed. As the camera follows Tom out of the room, the lighting is now not so bright, and the camera is slightly lower down to give the viewer the impression of how Toms feeling.

Tom enters the living room and begins to look around the room. At some points he will half smile, others almost look afraid. As he begins walking slowly toward the unlit kitchen a shadow moves behind it, but he doesn’t notice. He continues into the kitchen and without entering the room puts his arm round the wall attempting to find the light switch. After grasping the wall for several seconds he finally finds the switch, and turns the light on.

As the light comes on, Tom half takes a step back from the sharpness of the light. He walks over to the kitchen sink as he looks around for a glass, he looks out of the window in front of the sink.
While squinting he says:

Tom - “What the fuck?”

A silhouette of a person flashes past the window, tom jumps back in shock. A shadow moves behind tom along the wall, this time Tom notices it and turns around in panic. The shots of tom will all be from afar to emphasize how distant from reality he is and how distant he feels from all the objects in the room, i.e doors and chairs.

As tom struggles to walk properly into the living room, he is swaying from side to side and has no sense of balance.

Scene 3
The camera is back in the living room with Simon sitting on the sofa. He is nervously looking around the room, showing obvious signs of discomfort. As he frantically looks around the room, he attempts to look for his phone, there is a loud bang against the window. Simon immediately stands up, and half falls back on the sofa. As he gets up, the camera will pan across Simons face as he turns his head.
As he stumbles up to the window and slides across the curtain, I will show a shot at the window from the outside, where another silhouette will flash by the camera. As Simon steps back in shock, the door of the room will slam shut, followed by running footsteps,
Simon looks both confused and scared, and shouts

Simon - “Tom? Will?”

Scene 3.

The camera shows Tom between the kitchen and the living room spinning round in circles on the spot. The camera is down by his feet spinning round with him, looking up at his face, this is to try and let the audience share the characters experience.

The camera then switches to Will who is in his bedroom. The camera is close to his face, slightly to the right and just above head height. His face will look distressed as he peers directly past the camera toward the door.

The camera switches back to Simon in the living room. He is stood close to the window, the lighting in the room has been lifted and the mood of the film has lightened. Still with a confused look on his face he stands for a moment with an obvious question on his mind. Will then enters room, still with a distressed look on his face, followed by tom who also has a bewildered look on his face.
All three boys look at each other for a moment, when Tom breaks the silence,

Tom - “wwwhat the hell was that all about? That was rediculous?”

Will - “yeh it made me prang out in my room for a while, I even had to go outside for some fresh air”

Simon - “I was in here on my own the whole time, I didn’t know what to do with myself”

Tom “mate, we were all by ourselves”

Simon - “yeh maybe next time we should all try and stay together next time”

Will - “yeh definatly, I’m not going anywhere near that stuff for a while though”

Simon - “speak for yourself, Tom you wanna do some more?”

Tom - “yea, I’ve got to go and get a drink this time though, all that tranquiliser made me have the dirtiest taste in my mouth”

The screen then goes black, and then from far out will zoom into tom who has just done another line of ketamine and goes into the back of his chair. The camera will zoom right up close to Tom’s eye for the final shot. This shot will be sped up to display the drugs entering Tom’s body.

Character Study.

Tom - Tom is a 19 year old student from just outside Birmingham. He is a confident guy, who makes friends easily. He has never tried drugs before, but is always willing to try new things, although he is a regular marijuana user. He is a fairly laid back individual who listens to hip hop which is his main bond with the other two characters. He is from a fairly well off background ground and is the joker of the group. Tom considers himself to be better friends with Simon than Will, and this is emphasized in my film.

Will - Will is the odd one out of the group. He is from a small town south of London. Smoking marijuana is his main bond with the other two in the group. He is a bit more cautious about experimenting with drugs and new situations. Will is obviously more nervous about trying ketamine than the other two, and my film will reflect this. This is why Will is finds the experience not as enjoyable as the other two. Will represents the more sensible side of three, which is the reason for him being the odd one out of the group. Will is more mainstream than the other two and listens to indie music as well as hip hop, and this represents the way he dresses and his slight difference from the other two.

Simon - Simon is a similar character to Will. He is outgoing and confident and is willing to experiment with new things, although he is unsure of how this experience will turn out. He also feels a stronger bond with Tom than will. Simon is from London and also listens to hip hop, he has tried other drugs before, but became interested in ketamine when he came to University and heard about lots of other people trying it for the first time, and wanted to see what the hype was about.

Triptease

Triptease is going to be a film about a group of three friends who decide to stay in for a night and try taking a new drug which has been recommended to them by another friend.
The situation will take a turn for the worse when the group of boys start to be unsure of how much the drug is affecting them. I want to create a twist in the film, and not give any indication of any drugs being involved until the last scene.
The opening scene will be the three friends back at their house after just meeting their friend to collect the substance, and have just taken their first dose. The will be slight references to where they have just been, to give the viewer a slight hint to what is going on. After the friends sit down and have a cigarette they notice one of the group has left the room. The two boys that are left in the room start questioning one another how each other is feeling. Both are unsure of how much the drug is affecting them, but both are aware of a change of lighting and how the perspective of the room has changed.
One of them decides to go and see where their friend is which is when the drug really starts to take effect. The lighting in the house will change to quite dim, and I will use lower down camera shots to emphasise the confusion. I will also use shadow effects behind the characters to endure fear into both the character and the viewer.
I will switch between these two characters and show their experiences on the drug. The story of the third member of the group will begun to unfold. As he begins to sober up he realises he is outside, and re-enters the house to find one of his friends on the sofa with this head in his hands, and the other aimlessly walking round the living room.
The mood of the film will lighten at this point as the effects of the drug start to wear off. The two boys will then walk into the living room to find their other friend beginning to sober up.
After all in a state of shock and in confusion, the characters will all look at each other in disbelief, this is when I will show the user that it was all a drug trip, when one of the character will mention the name of the drug and ask if they want anymore.

Zombie Diaries

This was obviously a low budget UK production, producted written and edited by Michael Bartlett which is only film to date. I quite enjoyed the whole idea of this film, as it was a collection of videos diaries from people during the outbreak of the virus. The main thing that let this film down was the acting, which due to the low budget was obviously pretty amatuer. It was similar to the filming of blair witch project and cloverfield in the respect it was all done on a camcorder. It had quite a dark storyline which made up for the lack of acting quality and so it was still bareable to watch.

This is an awesome film. It had a really good dialect and thought the casting was really good as well. I really enjoyed the roles played by colin farrell and ralph fiennes. The film contained good wity humour and also some pretty violent scenes, which definatly made it a hit

Back From New York

I have finally returned from New York and am ready to start my second semester. Unfortunatly I havn't really had a chance to use the internet properlly due to being in a hotel for a couple of weeks, then spending the last 10 days of my trip in my friends apartment in Brooklyn, which was an experience.
While i was in new york my family insisted we took a trip to broadway to watch the theatre production Wicked. I am not usually the biggest fan of musicals, however this one i actually quite enjoyed. The thing i found most impressive was the use of props and the actual design of the stage. It is a prequal to the wizard of oz, and explains the story of the witches.

3/12/2008 - We edited for a total of 4 hours. Also, we only managed to finish another 15 seconds of our film. The same error messages kept disrupting and deleting our work. We have tried 3 different things various lecturers advised us to do to sort out the problem and none of them have worked. Although, we didn't make much progress again, we did get some feedback from some peers and a lecturer.

We got up to the first 30 seconds of our character study within the first hour or so of working today. We tried to put some music to the film and finished the introduction and then we saw, "Write Disc Error".. And then everything was lost. This kept happening every time we got to the 30 second mark. We kept saving after every little thing we did and sometimes it would let us reopen it, but then it would do the same thing again, and leave us back to where we had began.

We spent about 4 hours editing the intro and the start of the documentary. 2 hours of this work was lost when the editing software crashed due to a virus on one of the sound files we had.
We could not use any of the audio that was recorded on the R-09 recorder. This is because the volume was too low and the sound quality wasn't good enough.

We began the first stages of editing. We got some advice from one of our lecturers: to cut up the bits of the interview to make your story before you start with the visual side. So first, we started cutting up the interview, bit by bit, removing the parts we definitely don't want to use. Most of what we cut out was film that was taken in between questions, answers that trailed off, and long "umms" and other sounds. It took about two hours to clean it up and have only the best answers and to put it in a rough order to tell a story.

We changed our plan over the weekend after we got some feedback during one of our seminars. The one thing we were worried about was indeed the biggest problem. The input was that the audience needed something else to look at if we didn't want it to be boring. Previously, Joe, the director, mentioned that he wanted to record at least part of the interview to show in the film, even if it was only Nathan's mouth, not his entire face; we were told to applaud this decision and to go with it.
Then we filmed the interview section of our documentary.) We needed the same set as the first day of filming plus a boom mic to record sound for the camcorder. Everything went to plan, we set up both the camcorder and the R-09 recorder while we had a chat about some of the questions we would be asking. Nathan was a bit nervous but when we actually started recording he quickly seemed to get comfortable. He gave a great account of his experiences and the progression of his artwork; he also told some great stories.

On this date we filmed at the art shop, the Russell Youth Centre, and also some walls around Nottingham whilst we were driving around. Everything went well and everyone was happy with the result. Overall, it was a fairly uneventful day. We simply went from one location to the next and took footage of just about everything we saw that was relevant, as well as some places we had been told to go to view where Nathans work was on display.

At 4:00pm we picked up the equipment from the university office. The shoot went really well, however took much longer than we had expected. We were there from 6.00pm to about 9.00pm. The piece he created was indeed representative; it conveys an angry side of him, the paint-roller in the character's hand displays his passion for art, the skull and bones symbolize death, and the buildings emphasize the urban nature of his artwork. In the end, we got about 45 minutes of footage. The lighting was sufficient and everyone worked well together. We didn't have to worry about sound much because the sound will be comprised of the interview voiceover and music. We just recorded some sounds with the R-09 recorder such as the spray paint can being sprayed and general atmospheric sounds.

On this date when we needed to get the forms signed with approval and take out the camera and equipment, we couldn't find any lecturers and when we did there were, of course, problems, and things needed to be added to them. “Urban Art: Kid33”

Proposal

“Urban Art” is a documentary about Nathan Bainbridge, aka Kid30, from the graffiti group Oxygen Thievez. In this film, we will be trying to find out how he began his role as a graffiti artist and his perception on the culture. The length of this character study will be approximately four minutes.”

We see Nathan as an artist expressing his individuality through a taboo art-form. The story will focus on the progression of his artwork and his views surrounding the area. This documentary will be presented through a voice recorded interview and various shots of Nathan painting a piece of which he sees himself artistically. Pictures of other “tags” and sketches by Kid33 will be shown throughout the film. “Urban Art” will use constant moving imagery from beginning to end to invoke the flowing feeling of an aerosol can painting a piece of graffiti.

Today we had another group meeting and got in contact with the guy we are doing our documentarary (kid30) and planned a meeting with him for the following day, to see the location of where we will be filming and to put our initial ideas across to nathan(kid30) and see what he thinks..
He seemed quite enthusiastic about our idea though which was a good sign, we all looked forward to getting the project underway.
We also drew out the storyboard today and we wrote out some questions we will ask Kid30 in a voice recorded interview which will be in the proposal.

We had another group meeting, and began planning out ideas for how we want our documentry to look. We came up with an initial idea of our storyboard and watched several documentaries to give us some initial ideas. the second documentry we watched, (LA Taggers) gave us the main idea for our documentary. It talks about gang related activity associated with graffiti and how it's damaging the community. we all agreed that was not true, and we see graffiti as more of an art form. We also agreed that it can be used to help the community, and that is what we want to base our documentary on.

Due to our initial character study not pulling through, we decided to begin researching for a new possible character. This was proving more difficult that first expected due to 3 of our group members being from abroad and not having many contacts in the UK. Fortunatly one of our members came across a member of the oxygen theivez, who agreed to be in our documentary.
We immediatly started preperation for it.
We came up with a working title very quickly of "Urban Art" and with the concept of whether or not graffiti is art or a crime. We chose to do it on this for a few reasons, firstly we all find graffiti interesting and also what's behind graffiti in the scence that you dont usually see them being done there is a blank wall one day and the next there can be something on it. So we think it would be interesting to find out the charachter behind this.

- How he got into it
- How he got recognised
- Why they see it as an art
- Has he ever been caught
- What message he sends from his graffiti

Our character study is on Nathan Bainbridge, AKA Smallkid, AKA Kid30.
Nathan is 33 years old and from a small town outside of OXford. He runs a small design company called small kid designs. www.smallkid.co.uk
He studied illustration at Portsmouth Uni, but then realised there was limited opportunities in this industry. It was when he moved up to Nottingham, after being involved with the running of a drum 'n' bass night in home town, that he teamed up with a friend starting up a similar night(Detonate). He began designing flyers for Detonate, and this opened new doors as he saw the opportunities within the design industry.
Nathan was always interested in art, his mum used to be an artist and his grandad was an arcitect, which he feels is where he got his creative side. He is now an established commercial artist/painter within Nottingham, and does community work on a regular basis, which helps him finance his hobby. Nathan got involved in graffiti, by being taken out with a local painter in nottingham called Creeks. He has since developed his own style, which is character based. His main influences are Jeremy Fish, Sam Flores and Flying Fortress.

After finally capturing all of our footage onto the computers, we began editing our documentry. After spending several hours editing the footage we have, and trimming it from 2 hours to ten minutes, I decided to try and upload the song we had chosen for it.
Unfortunatly, my friend who sent me the song, also sent with it a virus which has subsequently broken my external harddrive and chris', along with the footage we have. Lucky we still have the tapes with all of the original footage, it just means we have to capture everything again.

As a group we have put together a few questions of which we will choose the best edit in post production. The questions will spur him on to tell the story he intends to get across to the viewer. Scene 1: We are going to have shots of Kid33’s work fading from one to another with the title and production name showing. We will use a hip- hop song named “Hell on Earth” for the duration of the introduction as it will set the film off with the urban feel that we intend to portray. The total duration of the introduction will be roughly 15 seconds.

Scene 2: We will ask Kid33 to paint a picture of how he sees himself. It will not necessarily be a the conventional way in which someone might portray themselves, but his own abstract interpretation of what represents him as a person i.e. personality, experiences etc. Through out the film the camera will focus on various areas of the piece of art such as parts of the face or body to help convey the relevant message Kid33 is trying to get across. This scene will contain rough background of Kid33s life and how he began his life as a graffiti artist. We do not intend to show Kid33’s face, however the questions he answers to through out the scene will be used as a voice over. This will give the viewer a sense of ambiguity around Kid33 as a character who seemingly has a hobby of which can have a criminal background. Other shots of his artwork will be edited into the scene. The duration of this scene will be roughly 45 seconds.

Scene 3: The second scene will flow into the third carrying on the theme of graffiti often being known as a criminal offence. We will be focusing on the legal issues regarding graffiti, his opinions on graffiti as a whole and if he has had any previous encounters with the police regarding his artwork. This camera will be focusing on the mouth of the painting that he creates and other images of work he has done that relates to this topic. This scene should last for roughly 45 seconds.

Scene 4: The fourth scene will focus on areas in which he may have helped the community such as work shops etc. Keeping the theme of focusing on a specific part of the painting he created, we will edit in shots of the representation of his hands. Shots of his artwork that he may have produced in projects to help the community will be edited in through out the scene. This scene will last for roughly 45 seconds.

Scene 5: Scene five will be his overview of the subject and what art means to him in which we will show still images of Kid33 and his graffiti group Oxygen Thievez’s artwork in public areas. The camera will also cut to the image of his eyes in his artistic interpretation of himself. This section of the film will last for roughly 20 seconds.

Scene 6: This will be our final shot of his finished art work where his portrait is revealed to the viewer. We will attach a piece of cellophane to the camera lens for Kid33 to sign as the credit roll across the screen. This section will take roughly 15 seconds.

To keep the viewer’s interest we are going to show the images and film with a variety of different effects on some shots we will have video noise and changing the saturation, brightness and contrast to give it a 9mm film look. This is to give it an urban feel. In contrast to show graffiti is still an art form we will intensify the brightness. We also are going to dissolve images of Kid33’s artwork into one another.

As a group, we share a common interest in art, specifically urban and underground art. Much of this style of art is not properly recognised. In particular, we believe that graffiti is looked upon with a negative view. This is due to its criminal associations and a misunderstanding of the culture. Therefore, we wish to present a character which will show the audience the artistic end of the graffiti spectrum and leave them feeling inspired. Through this character study of Nathan Bainbridge, we aim to answer underlying questions surrounding the controversy surrounding urban art and to give a voice to the underground art culture of graffiti.

First day of filming.

Yesterday we had our first day of filming, in Kid30's studio . Heres some of the photos we took during the day.

From this image I saw two men, who are the focal point of the shot. They are seperated by the table, but both seem to be worlds apart in terms of situation.
I get the impression that the main in the suit is important, respectable and maintained, and doesn't seem to be in as bad a situation as the other guy. I get this impression from his calm posture, he looks very relaxed and casual.
The other man almost looks as if he is in prison, he seems to be quite laid back, open posture, legs apart and not to botherd about his situation.

After spending the last two weeks planning for our documentry, our main charachter who we were basing the documentry on has disapeared and is unreachable. So rather than waste any more time trying to contact him we have changed the idea of our documentry and basing it on someone completely different. Because most of our group havn't lived in England for the past 5 years, it was difficult for us to think of any contacts we had that would be interesting. Then all of a sudden, one of our group members got speaking to a member of the Oxygen Thievz, who are a griffiti group from Nottingham.
All members of our group were interested in following this up, and nathan one of the group members said he was more than happy to help. The documentry is mainly going to be focused on him, but also include other members of the group. Their work can be seen around Nottingham, and since they have been brought to our attention I have noticed some of their work.(Mansfield Road, on the side of the Ohmygosh record shop)

Here are some of the points and questions of our documentry -
1.How he/they got into graffiti
2.Urban Art
3.Do you think it should be considered an art of criminal offence?
4.How have they gone from breaking the law, to being asked by the council to run workshops, and spray designs in places around the city.
5.Insight into an urban artist
6.Getting an insight into the emotion behind graffiti. i.e. what their tags mean
7.Is graffiti an escape?
8.Does the illegal element attract you to it initially?
9.Have you ever been caught?

Our target audience is art fans, and people who appreciate art no matter what type it is. And generally give an insight into graffiti. Our group is meeting up over the next couple of days and the weekend to finalise ideas and storyboard.

Nighthawks by Edward Hopper was painted in 1945. It was painted to create an image of lonliness. He began painting the picture after Pearl Habour and it was inspired by the gloominess across the country. My knowledge of paintings is limited to say the least, but this is one painting that has always stood out in my mind, and when we were set this task it was the first image that came to my mind. The main thing that attracted me to the painting was the image of lonliness that it does create, and upon immediatly looking at the photo I was able to tell where it was meant to be and what time.

Yesterday..

Yesterday we spent the day working with someone from the bbc, who came in and showed us interview techniques and the correct ways to use a video camera.
Personally, the most important thing I learned yesterday was how to do a sequence, which is a series of shots using a video camera.

1.Close up of activity
2.Close up of face
3.Wide shot, including surroundings
4.Over the shoulder shot, puts viewer into perspective
5.Creative shot

We also learned that when filming interviews it is important to have all three eyes on the same level, the interviewer, the interviwee and the camera.

I will be taking this into consideration when filming our documentry.

After discussions with our group, we have all been assigned different roles within the group. I have been assigned the role of Director.
I have already begun coming up with ideas of how I want our documentry to appear, and deciding in what order the scenes are going to go.
Later this week, we plan on having our scenes planned out with photos from the spots we plan on filming. I will post them up soon as possible
